Description

Musanze

The base for mountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga volcanoes — Volcanoes National Park and untouched landscapes.

Wiki

The gateway to one of the rarest and most impressive wildlife encounters in the world — the mountain gorillas. Around 100,000 people live here in northern Rwanda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The former name, Ruhengeri, is still in everyday use. The town lies at the foot of five volcanoes in the Virunga chain, and it is the base for every tour into Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans).

Main sights

  • Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) — the main draw, home to around 600 mountain gorillas, some 40% of the world population. A trekking permit costs $1,500 per person, the price having risen in 2017.
  • Mountain gorilla trekking — anything from one hour to eight, depending on the group you are assigned. You spend an hour with the gorillas at a distance of seven metres.
  • Golden monkey trekking — a less celebrated but absorbing encounter with an Albertine Rift endemic; the permit costs $100.
  • Dian Fossey's grave — up in the mountains, between the Karisoke camps. The hike to it takes four to five hours there and back.
  • Musanze Cave — a lava tube two kilometres long.
  • Lake Burera — one of the twin volcanic lakes, an hour away.
  • The five volcanoes of the Virunga chain: Karisimbi (4,507 m), Bisoke (3,711 m), Sabyinyo (3,634 m), Gahinga (3,474 m) and Muhabura (4,127 m). All can be climbed.
  • Iby'iwacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Village) — reformed poachers now working as cultural guides.
  • The ethnographic museum at Kinigi — local culture.
  • Lake Kivu — the third-largest lake in Africa, an hour away.

Food and prices

The cooking is Rwandan: matoke, isombe and ifisashi (vegetables in peanut sauce), brochettes and tilapia. Rwandan coffee is world class, grown as highland arabica. Lunch in a café is $6-12, dinner at a lodge near the park $25-50. Lodges by the park run $200-1,500 a night. A litre of petrol costs $1.30 and a moto-taxi, helmet provided, $1-3; the lodges arrange transfers. Prices are as of 2026.

Getting there and getting around

Kigali International Airport (KGL), two and a half hours away, is the main gateway. Shuttles from Kigali to Musanze cost $8-15, a private taxi shuttle $80-120. Many tour operators drive guests directly. Around the district a vehicle is essential, and operators usually include one in the package. The rise in the permit price to $1,500 cut visitor numbers sharply, but it also improved the experience.

When to go

June to September and December to February are dry at 12-22°C and best for trekking. The long rains (March to May) leave the trails slippery and the gorillas harder to find, but prices are lower and some permit discounts appear. At 1,500-2,500 m the climate is mild all year, but always bring a warm layer. Kwita Izina, the gorilla naming ceremony, falls in September and is a major national occasion.
