Phú Lốc

A single tower of the 10th-11th century on a hill in An Nhơn district. It is in the early Cham style, simpler and squatter than the later towers. It also has a second name, Tháp Vàng, the Golden Tower; French researchers recorded it that way too, as Tour d'Or. The base is square, about ten metres to a side, and the building itself rises some fifteen metres, but the hill beneath it is around seventy metres high, so above the flat Bình Định plain the tower works like a lighthouse and can be seen for many kilometres. Inside is a cramped chamber with no windows, lit only through the eastern opening; the outer walls are almost free of carving, but the flat pilasters and stepped false doors read clearly. The tower was declared a national architectural monument in 1995. The tower stands on a seventy-metre hill and is visible for kilometres, while from the hill itself there is a view over the Bình Định plain, which is what people climb up for. Inside is a cramped dark chamber with no windows. The tower is usually seen on the way between Quy Nhơn and the other sanctuaries of Bình Định. It was declared a national architectural monument in 1995; nobody travels here specially, it is visited in passing on the Bình Định route.
