Chess Hill Cascade

On a slope in the eastern part of the Lower Park the water runs down four inclined slabs chequered in black and white, while three painted dragons sit at the top and give the cascade its second name, Dragon Hill. Marble statues of ancient gods, Italian work of the early eighteenth century, are ranged along the sides of the stairs. The cascade was begun under Peter I, the dragons appeared in the 1730s, and the chequered pattern was painted on the chutes in the second half of the eighteenth century.
