Bai Dinh is the largest Buddhist complex in Vietnam, set at the foot of the mountain of the same name in Ninh Binh province. The old sanctuary in a cave on the slope has been known since the 11th century and is linked with the teacher Nguyen Minh Khong, while the lower, newer complex was built from 2003 for the millennium of Hanoi. Five hundred stone arhats stand along two covered galleries, and the passage between them runs for more than a kilometre. In the main hall sits a bronze Shakyamuni Buddha about ten metres high, cast by Vietnamese masters. The thirteen-tiered Bao Thien stupa rises above the whole complex and is visible from the road to Hoa Lu.
