Park on Paveletskaya Square

The square in front of Paveletsky railway station stood fenced off for two decades: the pit for a shopping centre was dug back in the late 1990s, then construction stalled, and the site turned into an urban wasteland behind a hoarding. The deadlock broke only by 2020, when the underground complex was finally completed and its roof was handed over to a public space. The result is a park raised above the street: sloping lawns, an amphitheatre, a round plaza with a dry fountain in the middle and glass lanterns through which daylight travels down to the lower floors. The wavy glazed roof with its wide canopy became the main landmark of the place and is clearly visible from the steps by the station. Around the perimeter the square is closed in by Stalin-era apartment blocks, behind them rises the tower of a residential complex, and on the other side stands the historic facade of the station. In the evening skateboarders and cyclists gather here, while the square itself works as a shortcut from the metro to the platforms.
