Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a park on the site of the old district of the same name, demolished in the middle of the twentieth century, and of an unfinished high-rise whose foundation was later taken by the Rossiya hotel. The public space opened in 2017 to a design by the practice Diller Scofidio + Renfro: instead of flower beds, four natural zones were planted here, forest, steppe, tundra and floodplain meadows, and they follow one another as you climb the artificial relief. The paths now dive under embankments, now bring you out onto the roofs of pavilions, so ground level keeps changing all the time. From the upper terraces there is a view of the Kremlin, the Moskvoretsky Bridge and the high-rise on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment. Along the northern edge of the park runs Varvarka, one of the oldest streets in the city, where several churches have survived on a short stretch: the cathedral of the Znamensky Monastery, the Church of Saint George on Pskov Hill, the Church of Maximus the Blessed, and also the chambers of the Romanov boyars and the Old English Court. From the hills of the park all these buildings can be seen at once, which is almost impossible from the street itself.
