Paveletsky Railway Station

Paveletsky station was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as the terminus of the Ryazan-Ural railway and until 1941 was called Saratovsky. The building stretches along the square as a low symmetrical ribbon: a central projecting bay with a clock and a semicircular pediment, and at the sides wings with arched windows and rusticated portals. The original design is attributed to Yuri Diederichs; the station was later rebuilt more than once, but the silhouette with the clock was kept. Trains leave from here for the south and south-east, as well as the Aeroexpress to Domodedovo. A separate story is connected with this station: in 1924 the funeral train carrying Lenin's body arrived here, and the locomotive and carriage stood for a long time in a special pavilion nearby. Today a park has been opened in front of the facade on the roof of an underground shopping centre, so the building can be seen in its entirety from the green slope, an angle rare for Moscow stations, where nothing blocks the facade.
