Tháp Nhạn

An 11th-century tower on the summit of Nhạn Mountain in the town of Tuy Hòa, 23.5 metres tall. It is one of the symbols of Phú Yên province. The mountain is low, a little over sixty metres, but it rises straight above the mouth of the Đà Rằng River in the middle of the town, so the tower is visible from almost everywhere. The body is square, about ten metres to a side, and the top is built up from four diminishing tiers repeating the shape of the main volume. Over the centuries, and especially during the war years, the brickwork suffered badly, and the tower was twice reinforced and partly rebuilt, in the 1960s and in the 1990s. This is one of the few Cham sanctuaries where worship never stopped: the Vietnamese venerate the goddess Thiên Y A Na here, heir to the Cham Po Nagar, and bring offerings to the tower. In 2018 the mountain together with the tower was granted the status of a monument of special importance. The tower stands on Nhạn Mountain right above Tuy Hòa, and the climb up takes a few minutes; in the evening it is floodlit, and the view of the river mouth and the town is at its best at sunset. The sanctuary is active, so keep quiet when offerings are being made. Admission is free. Nhạn Mountain with its tower has long been the calling card of Phú Yên province and appears on almost every postcard of the town.
