Wat Ratchaburana

Wat Ratchaburana is one of the best preserved temples of old Ayutthaya, raised in 1424 by King Borommarachathirat II. The occasion was the death of his two elder brothers, who fought each other on elephants for the throne and killed one another, and the monastery was built on the place of their cremation. The main prang in the Khmer style has survived almost whole, and a steep brick staircase leads up to its entrance. Murals of the 15th century, rare for Thai architecture of this period, remain in the crypt under the tower. The hidden chamber was looted in 1957, but part of the golden regalia was recovered and is now displayed in the Chao Sam Phraya national museum nearby.
