Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, known as Aurangabad until 2023, is a major historic city in Maharashtra and a destination in its own right. Its urban heritage includes Bibi Ka Maqbara, the 17th-century Panchakki water mill, museums, and a network of 52 historic gates. Bhadkal Gate is among the best-known. At Panchakki, an underground channel and water-powered mill offer a glimpse of the engineering used to bring water into the city. The city also makes a practical base for exploring the region’s monuments. Ellora Caves lie about 30 km to the north, with the Ghrishneshwar Temple nearby. Ajanta Caves are a separate excursion and are better planned as their own trip rather than squeezed into the same short outing as Ellora. Allow time in the city for Bibi Ka Maqbara, Panchakki, and a museum, then plan day trips around current opening hours and transport availability. Check those details close to your visit, as schedules and access can change.
