Lopburi, Thailand: Khmer temples and King Narai’s palace

Lopburi’s historic centre

Lopburi is one of central Thailand’s old cities. It served as an important political and trading centre in different periods; the reign of King Narai in the seventeenth century left a particularly visible mark. Khmer brick sanctuaries, Buddhist temples and palace buildings stand close together in the historic area.

Sights to see

Phra Prang Sam Yot is a three-prang temple and the city’s best-known landmark. Prang Khaek, another Khmer-era sanctuary, is nearby. Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat stands opposite the old railway station and reflects several periods of local history. The former royal palace and its museum add another layer to the visit.

Practical notes

One day is enough for the main ruins and palace complex. Check opening hours and entry conditions, since individual monuments may close before the surrounding streets. Macaques live in the city: do not feed them, keep food and small belongings secure, and give the animals space. A train is one option from Bangkok; verify the timetable for your travel date.

Plan outdoor walking for morning or late afternoon. The temples are walkable from one another, while local transport helps with farther sites.
