Surabaya: heritage districts and the port city centre

A port city with layers of history

Surabaya sits on the north-eastern coast of Java and remains one of Indonesia’s major urban and port centres. Its story is tied to trade, the harbour and the struggle for independence; the city is widely known as the “City of Heroes”. The old districts show how different trading and cultural communities shaped its streets.

Sights in the centre

Kota Lama is a good starting point for a heritage walk. The area is divided into European, Chinese, Arab and Malay zones, each with streets and buildings linked to Surabaya’s trading past. Kembang Jepun remains a busy commercial street, while Tunjungan connects historic architecture with the modern centre. For twentieth-century history, add the Submarine Museum (Monkasel) and Tugu Pahlawan monument.

How much time to allow

A full day works for the central districts and one museum. A second day gives you time for parks, more museums and a slower look at the city. Surabaya is large and hot, so use local buses, taxis or other transport between districts. Plan outdoor walks for the morning or late afternoon rather than spending the whole day in direct sun.
