Ban Rak Thai

Attraction·Mae Hong Son·Thailand

Ban Rak Thai is a mountain village near the Myanmar border, about 44 kilometres from Mae Hong Son via Pha Suea Waterfall. It sits beside a lake among forested slopes and tea fields. Most residents are descendants of people who left southern China, and Chinese traditions, language and writing remain part of village life. Local culture reflects Chinese, Shan and Thai influences.

Guesthouses, tea shops and restaurants line the lake. Many houses use traditional materials, including clay mixed with rice straw, giving the settlement a distinctive appearance. Yunnan-style dishes are served in local restaurants, and shops sell several varieties of tea, including oolong. A walk along the water and through the lanes between homes and tea plots is the simplest way to explore. Staying longer than a brief lakeside stop makes it easier to notice how the architecture, landscape and daily life shape this border community.

Ban Rak Thai lies away from the town centre and regular public transport, so visitors usually arrive by car or arranged transfer. The mountain road passes several bends and scenic stops, and travel can take longer after rain. As the village is close to the border, remain on established visitor routes and check access before using smaller roads. Accommodation is worth booking ahead for popular weekends and the cool season.
