The Lao She Teahouse opened in 1988 on Qianmen Square and is named after the writer Lao She, author of the play Teahouse. The establishment occupies several rooms decorated in the spirit of an old Beijing courtyard, with carved wooden screens, red lanterns and stone lions at the entrance. Every evening performances of traditional arts are given here, from excerpts of Peking opera and the bianlian changing of masks to acrobatics and xiangsheng comic dialogues. Guests are served tea from various provinces of China along with small snacks of the capital. Over the years the teahouse has received a great many official delegations and has turned into one of the showcases of Beijing culture.
