The Dunhuang Museum gathers everything that turns up in the oasis and around it, from Han frontier posts and wooden slips bearing texts to Buddhist manuscripts and fabrics from the caravan routes. Part of the galleries is given to the Mogao Caves, where copies have been made of the wall paintings and of whole cave interiors that may not be photographed in the caves themselves. A separate section covers the Han Great Wall and the signal towers that stood in the desert west of the town. The present building in the eastern part of Dunhuang was put up at the start of the 2010s. The display is compact and makes a good complement to a trip out to Mogao and the Yumen Pass.
