Juma Mosque

The Friday mosque of Khiva is arranged unlike the usual pattern, with no portal, no dome and no courtyard, only a low hall whose roof is carried by more than two hundred wooden columns. Some of the shafts were carved between the tenth and twelfth centuries and brought here from earlier buildings, while the rest were made at the end of the eighteenth century, when the mosque was rebuilt. Light falls inside through a few openings in the ceiling.
