Calle Real Heritage District, Iloilo

Calle Real is a historic commercial street in central Iloilo; its official name today is J.M. Basa Street. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) placed part of the street and the surrounding blocks in a heritage zone under Resolution No. 03, dated 16 June 2014. The resolution describes Calle Real as a meeting point for European, Chinese and American commercial firms from the mid-nineteenth century, whose presence helped raise property values and shape the city’s growth.

Iloilo opened its port to foreign trade in 1855. As trade expanded, companies and shops appeared across the city, and Calle Real became part of its old business centre. The NHCP resolution names dozens of buildings on J.M. Basa and nearby streets, including the Javellana Building, Iloilo Central Trading Building and Regent Arcade. It traces the district’s paved streets and varied buildings from 1884 through the early twentieth century, and identifies neoclassical, Art Deco, Beaux-Arts and later styles. The city’s cultural property inventory separately lists the Javellana Building at the corner of J.M. Basa and Guanco. This stretch is a good place to pause and look at the façades and arcades.

Calle Real fits naturally into a walking route through central Iloilo with Aduana, Regent Arcade and Plaza Libertad. It remains an active city street, with shops and other businesses at ground level; the heritage designation protects the historic streetscape rather than turning the area into one museum complex. Individual buildings may have their own access rules, so check separately before visiting an interior.
