Krasnye Ryady Trading Rows

The Krasnye Ryady are the main trading building of Kostroma, put up at the end of the eighteenth century to a design by Karl von Clehr under the supervision of the local architect Stepan Vorotilov. The huge quadrangle with open arcaded galleries took up a whole block above the Volga and still serves its original purpose. Fabrics and manufactured goods, known in Russian as red wares, were sold in these arches, and that is where the name comes from. The Church of the Saviour in the Rows is built into the quadrangle, a rare solution for a Russian trading yard. The Flour, Tobacco and Gingerbread Rows stand next to it, forming together with the Krasnye Ryady one of the fullest trading ensembles of Russian classicism.
