The Lamplighter Hare is one of the bronze figures of the Kostroma quest known as the Mazai Hares, set out along Mira Avenue and the neighbouring streets of the historic centre. The sculpture is fixed directly to a cast-iron lamp post: a hare in a frock coat stands by the base as if about to light the lamp. The subject refers to the poem by Nekrasov about Grandfather Mazai and the hares, written from the impressions the poet gathered in the Kostroma country. A plate with a code hangs beside the figure, by which those taking part in the quest mark the point they have found. Hunting for the hares around the centre has become an ordinary excuse for an unhurried walk among townspeople and visitors alike.
