Church of the Saviour in the Rows

The Church of the Saviour in the Rows stands inside the trading yard of Kostroma and is older than the trading blocks around it. The stone church was built in 1766 on the site of an earlier wooden one, and two decades later the quadrangle of the Krasnye Ryady was raised around it. The bell tower in the spirit of early classicism was added at the end of the eighteenth century to a design by Stepan Vorotilov, and its spire became the vertical axis of the whole market square. Five heads with green domes rise directly above the arches of the galleries. Under Soviet rule the building held a storehouse, and the church was returned to believers in the early nineties.
