The largest religious complex in Iran grew up around the tomb of the eighth Shia imam Ali ibn Musa al-Reza, who died at the start of the ninth century. Most of the buildings date from Timurid and Safavid times, and within the walls stand the Goharshad Mosque, several sahn courtyards, museums, a library and a madrasa. Millions of pilgrims come here every year.
