The museum on Vo Van Tan Street opened in September 1975, a few months after the fall of Saigon, and for a time was called the House for Displaying War Crimes of American and Puppet Forces. Its present neutral name was fixed in 1995, when Vietnam and the United States restored diplomatic relations. The display occupies three floors and tells the story of the war from the Vietnamese side, covering the consequences of defoliants, famous press photographs and the international antiwar movement. Captured American equipment stands in the open courtyard, including tanks, howitzers, a ground-attack aircraft and helicopters. The museum is among the most visited in the country and stands one block from the Independence Palace.
