Malacca River Waterfront

The Malacca River waterfront is a pedestrian promenade along both banks of the narrow channel that divides the historic centre of the city in two. In colonial times the river worked as a harbour: loaded boats came up it, and the warehouses opened their doors straight onto the water. By the end of the two thousands the banks were cleared and reinforced, wooden decking was laid on top and several light bridges were thrown across. The old warehouses and shophouses facing the river were covered with large murals, and in the evening the facades and the water are lit. Pleasure boats run from the landing by Dutch Square and go downstream and back in under an hour.
