The equestrian statue of Prince Mikhail Yaroslavich has stood on Sovetskaya Square since December 2008 and is the work of the sculptor Andrey Kovalchuk. Mikhail was Grand Prince of Vladimir from 1305 to 1318, contested primacy with Moscow and died in the Horde, and while the church venerates him as a holy prince, in Tver he is regarded as the heavenly patron of the city. Behind the statue rises the frontage of Sovetskaya Square, the formal centre laid out after the fire of 1763.
