Pak Ou Caves (Tham Ting)

Pak Ou Caves, known locally as Tham Ting, stand on the Mekong near its meeting with the Nam Ou. The name refers to two separate caverns in a limestone cliff. The lower cave sits beside the river and is usually the first stop. It is not a deep cavern but a relatively small opening in the rock face. Inside and around the entrance are thousands of Buddha figures in different sizes. Local people have brought them here as an expression of Buddhist faith and a way to make merit. The caves are therefore both a natural site and a place of religious significance.

A staircase to the left of the lower cave climbs through the forest to the upper cave. Reaching it adds a short hillside walk to the visit. The upper cavern has a more modest interior, but its doorway with ornate metalwork is a notable detail. Visit the two caves in turn: the lower chamber contains the main gathering of Buddha images, while the climb to the upper one reveals more of the site’s setting in the cliff above the river. The many figures are the result of a long local practice, rather than a museum display.

You can travel to Pak Ou by boat upstream on the Mekong from Luang Prabang; the official tourism site says the trip takes about an hour and a half. Alternatively, go by road to Pak Ou village and take a small boat across the river. Travelling by boat offers a view of life along the Mekong, and some tours stop at other places along the way. Choose the route according to whether you prefer the river journey or a quicker transfer to the crossing.

The route between the caves includes stairs and uneven natural ground. The upper cave is above the lower one, so comfortable footwear makes the walk easier. During Lao New Year, the Royal Family, monks and local devotees once came to pour water over a sacred Buddha image as part of Pi Mai observances. The caves remain a place of religious importance. Move respectfully and do not touch the statues without permission. Check current visiting and crossing arrangements before setting out.
