The cathedral was built between 1723 and 1726 with the money of the merchant Ivan Mikhlyaev in memory of the visit of Peter I to Kazan. It is a rare example of Russian baroque for the Volga region, the six-tier church and its free-standing bell tower being covered all over with moulded garlands and painted in white, blue and ochre. Inside survives a carved and gilded iconostasis of the eighteenth century.
