Pyatnitskiye Gate of the Kolomna Kremlin

Attraction·Коломна·Russia

The Pyatnitskiye Gate served as the main entrance to the Kolomna kremlin and remains the largest surviving tower of the fortress. The gate tower was laid in red brick between 1525 and 1531 together with the whole stone wall that replaced the earlier wooden one. The passage was closed by double leaves and a portcullis, and a shrine with an icon was set above the arch. The old Astrakhan road entered the town through this gate, and Moscow sovereigns were met here. A pedestrian route into the kremlin now runs under the vault, and museums of kalach bread and Kolomna pastila work next door.
