Staraya Ladoga Fortress

The fortress stands on the spit where the little Ladozhka joins the Volkhov, on the site of one of the earliest fortified centres of northern Rus. The walls and towers seen today were laid in flagstone at the turn of the sixteenth century, and beside the Strelochnaya Tower a section of twelfth-century masonry has been laid open. Within the walls stand the white-stone Church of St George of the twelfth century, which keeps the fresco of the Miracle of St George and the Dragon, and the wooden Church of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki.
