A quarter of mud-brick houses in the centre of Kashgar, the residential part of the city that grew up around the Id Kah Mosque. From 2009 the blocks were rebuilt on a large scale, with some houses pulled down and others put up anew while the carved doors, balconies and painted facades were kept. The streets are paved with tiles and lit in the evening, and workshops and teahouses work along them.
