The convict prison was built by the kremlin walls in the 1850s and went on holding prisoners until 1989. Convoys bound for Siberia passed through it, and among its inmates were Dostoevsky, Chernyshevsky and Korolenko. The blocks now house a museum of Siberian penal servitude and exile, while the blank walls and watchtowers are kept as they were in the yard.
