Turpan Museum

The Turpan Museum holds the second largest collection of antiquities in Xinjiang after the one in Urumqi. The display is built around finds from the sites nearby: the ruined cities of Gaochang and Jiaohe, the Astana burials and the caravan roads that passed through the oasis. Dried mummies are kept here along with Tang documents on paper, silk fabrics, clay figurines and coins from a range of countries. A separate large hall is given to palaeontology, because the Turpan Depression yields skeletons of ancient rhinoceroses, proboscideans and dinosaurs. The museum's present building opened at the start of the 2010s.
