From the high bank of the Tvertsa by the wooden Tikhvin church the whole of old Torzhok comes into view, with the bend of the river, the roofs of the posad and the white Boris and Gleb Monastery with its golden dome on the far hill. Tradition dates the monastery to 1038, and its main cathedral was built between 1785 and 1796 to a design by Nikolai Lvov. The light is at its best in the evening, when the sun goes down beyond the river.
