Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang

Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang are two neighbouring Tai Yai temples in central Mae Hong Son, beside Nong Chong Kham Lake. The compounds stand side by side and form one of the town’s defining architectural landmarks. Their tiered roofs, carved details and Burmese-style chedi look different from temples in central Thailand and reflect the province’s cultural ties with the Shan people and neighbouring Myanmar.

Wat Chong Kham is regarded as one of the town’s historic temple complexes and is closely connected with the local Tai Yai community. Wat Chong Klang stands next to it within the same walled grounds and is distinguished by its white-and-gold chedi. Together, the temples show how local religious architecture draws on forms and decorative traditions shared across northern Thailand and the Burmese borderlands. These remain active places of worship: dress modestly when entering prayer halls, remove shoes where requested and avoid disturbing worshippers.

The temples are easy to visit on foot during a walk around the lake, with the town’s waterfront and evening market nearby. A daytime visit allows time to look at the buildings’ details; later in the day, the lakeside becomes livelier and offers views of the temple roofs from the opposite bank. This central stop fits naturally into a Mae Hong Son itinerary alongside Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu and a walk through the older streets.
