Wat Pho, formally Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram, is one of Bangkok’s principal royal temple complexes. It occupies a large site on Rattanakosin Island, just south of the Grand Palace. The temple is best known for the Reclining Buddha in its dedicated hall, while its courtyards hold dozens of other shrines, galleries, Buddha images and stupas. The four Royal Chedis stand out for their colourful ceramic mosaics and honour the first four kings of the Chakri dynasty. Wat Pho has long been a centre for Buddhist learning and traditional Thai medicine and massage. The buildings are arranged across several courtyards, so visitors move between the main chapel, Buddha galleries and chedi groups on foot. The temple’s official website gives its entrance at 2 Sanam Chai Road, beside the Grand Palace. Wat Arun stands across the Chao Phraya River; the ferry crossing makes it straightforward to visit both temples in one route. For visits to active temple buildings, wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.
