Phou Si Hill

Phou Si Hill rises above central Luang Prabang and gives a broad view over the old town, the Mekong and the surrounding mountains. It is more than a viewpoint: Buddhist temples stand on its slopes, and the summit remains a sacred religious site. The main landmark at the top is Wat Chomsi, with a white stupa about 20 metres high. The official Luang Prabang tourism site lists 328 steps on the popular route from the National Museum; frangipani trees line parts of the climb and provide patches of shade.

There are four access points. The best-known staircase starts opposite the National Museum; another entrance is beside the Nam Khan, a third approaches from the north near Joumkhong Village, and a western route passes through the Jingland Hotel grounds. You can go up one way and come down another to see a different side of the hill instead of retracing the same steps. Some sections are steep, so comfortable shoes and water are useful even for this short walk. Take your time in the heat and pause where the path is shaded.

Small temple grounds and shrines are scattered across the hill, including the cave temple Wat Tham Phou Si with Buddha images. Golden guardian figures mark one stairway, while a reclining Buddha rests among the trees and rock farther along the slope. These places belong to Luang Prabang’s religious life: keep your voice low, do not interrupt worship, and follow the rules at each temple. Cover your shoulders and knees; alcohol is prohibited at the sacred site.

From the summit, look for the bend of the Mekong, the tiled roofs of the old town and the bridges crossing the river. Sunset draws many visitors, so choose another time if you prefer a quieter climb; the daytime view is also expansive. Plan your descent around where you want to continue: the Nam Khan riverfront, the old streets or the National Museum area are all on different sides of the hill.
