Loo Pun Hong Temple

Loo Pun Hong is the temple of the guild of Cantonese builders and carpenters on Muntri Street in George Town. The stone plaque above the entrance calls it the old temple of Hu Jing, the patron of the craft whom the masters honoured on a par with the legendary builder Lu Ban. The building was put up in the second half of the 19th century, when Cantonese work gangs were building half the city, and it still belongs to the guild society. The door leaves are painted with figures of guardian deities, and a ceramic frieze with many-figured scenes runs above the cornice. The temple stands away from the main flow of visitors, and its steps are usually empty.
