Description

Denver

A city a mile above the Rockies: Colorado's gateway, with craft breweries, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and ski resorts an hour's drive away.

Wiki

Denver is the largest city and capital of the US state of Colorado, spread across the Great Plains at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains. Sitting at exactly one mile above sea level, it holds the official nickname "Mile-High City" and serves as the main gateway to the mountain parks, canyons and ski slopes of the American West.

Overview

The city proper is home to around 720,000 people, while the broader Front Range metropolitan area has a population of roughly three million. Denver was founded in 1858 as a gold-rush camp and grew rapidly into a commercial and railroad hub. Today it is a dynamic centre with a diverse economy spanning aerospace, energy, finance, telecommunications and a fast-growing tech sector. The climate is sharply continental and sunny almost year-round: dry, hot summers and snowy but often bright winters. The thin air at altitude means newcomers should drink plenty of water in the first few days and take it easy during physical exertion.

Colorado was among the first US states to legalise recreational cannabis, which became legal in 2014, so licensed dispensaries are common throughout the city.

Main Sights

  • Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre — a natural open-air venue among enormous red sandstone formations about 25 km to the west. The exceptional acoustics have made it legendary: The Beatles performed here in 1964, as have U2, Grateful Dead and hundreds of other artists. During the day the park is open for hiking and workouts.
  • 16th Street Mall — a two-kilometre pedestrian spine through the heart of downtown, lined with shops and cafés and served by the free MallRide shuttle running end to end.
  • Larimer Square — the city's oldest historic district, with 19th-century brick buildings occupied by restaurants, bars and boutiques.
  • State Capitol — the gilded dome is visible from far away; the thirteenth step of the main staircase is marked as the point exactly one mile above sea level.
  • Denver Art Museum — home to one of the finest collections of Native American art in the country; the bold extension was designed by Daniel Libeskind.
  • Union Station — a carefully restored 1881 rail terminus that has become a lively transport and dining hub with a hotel, bars and a bookshop.
  • Coors Field — the home stadium of the Colorado Rockies (MLB) in the LoDo neighbourhood, offering behind-the-scenes tours.
  • Rocky Mountain National Park — about an hour and a half away; the famous Trail Ridge Road climbs to nearly 3,713 m, with views across alpine tundra and mountain lakes.

Closer to downtown, the RiNo (River North) neighbourhood is worth exploring for its street murals and breweries, as are the Botanic Gardens and the Museum of Nature and Science beside City Park.

Food and Prices

Denver's food scene blends modern American and Southwestern traditions: spicy green chili sauce, hearty burgers, Colorado beef steaks and, of course, craft beer — the city is regarded as one of the country's brewing capitals. Lunch at a café runs about $18–25, dinner at a restaurant $40–80, and a pint of craft beer $7–9. A light-rail RTD ride costs $3–6, and a taxi or Uber across downtown $12–20. Prices are as of 2026.

Getting Around

Denver International Airport (DEN) is one of the busiest in the United States, instantly recognisable by the white tent-like peaks of its terminal. The RTD light-rail A Line connects it to downtown, reaching Union Station in about 40 minutes. The wider RTD network includes commuter trains and tram lines, but beyond the centre a car is more practical. For trips into the mountains and national parks, renting a car is effectively a necessity.

3-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1. Downtown: stroll the 16th Street Mall, visit Union Station and Larimer Square, then head up to the Capitol and Denver Art Museum.
  • Day 2. Nature and music: Red Rocks Park, viewpoints in the foothills, and in the evening a concert or a walk around the amphitheatre.
  • Day 3. The mountains: drive to Rocky Mountain National Park along Trail Ridge Road, or head to one of the ski resorts — Breckenridge, Vail or Aspen — ranging from one to several hours away.

Denver combines urban comfort with immediate access to wilderness, making it an excellent base for exploring the Rocky Mountains at any time of year.
