The palace of the khans of Khiva was built under Allakuli Khan in the 1830s inside Ichan-Kala. Its name translates as the stone yard, and behind the blank walls are hidden three courtyards, one for the harem, one for receptions and one for the court of law, each ringed by iwans on carved wooden columns. The walls are faced with blue and white tiles, and the ceilings are painted on wood.
