Pochtovaya Street is the pedestrian heart of Ryazan, which local people call the Ryazan Arbat. A stretch of several blocks was closed to traffic and paved with tiles, keeping the low merchant houses of the nineteenth century. The ground floors are taken up by cafes with summer terraces and by book and souvenir shops, while cast-iron lamps and benches are set along the axis of the street. Strings of lights are stretched above the roadway, and by evening the passage turns into a glowing corridor. This is a convenient place to begin a walk towards Sobornaya Square and the Ryazan kremlin.
