The principal church of the Ryazan Kremlin was built between 1693 and 1699 by the architect Yakov Bukhvostov and is one of the largest Russian churches in the Naryshkin baroque style. The red brick of the walls contrasts with the white-stone carving of the window surrounds and portals, and no two window surrounds repeat one another. Inside stands a seven-tier iconostasis of the late seventeenth century about twenty-seven metres high.
