Psar Nat is the central market of Battambang and the main landmark in the middle of the city. The yellow building with a stepped roof and a clock tower was built at the end of the thirties, when Cambodia was part of French Indochina, and it is considered one of the finest examples of colonial art deco in the country. Fish, spices, fabrics and gold are traded inside, while rows under awnings stretch around the perimeter. Most striking of all are the stacks of dried freshwater fish from Tonle Sap lake, sold here in dozens of varieties. Trading begins before daylight, and by noon the busiest hours are already over.
