Wat Damrey Sar is one of the main Buddhist monasteries of Battambang, a few blocks from the embankment of the Sangke River, and its name means white elephant. The main vihara is raised on a high plinth and surrounded by a double row of columns, while the many-tiered roof of orange tiles ends in carved gables and sharp spires. Painted sculptural groups stand in the courtyard: a chariot with four horses and scenes from the Ramayana, stupas holding ashes and figures of guardians along the entrance avenue. A community of monks lives at the monastery, and lessons for novices go on in open classrooms under a canopy.
