Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City and a landmark in the historic centre of Saigon. Designed by French architect Jules Bourard, it was built between 1877 and 1880 and consecrated at Easter in 1880. Building materials were shipped from France, and the red brick façade was left unplastered. The design combines Romanesque forms with Gothic details: a symmetrical front, a rose window, arched openings and two tall bell towers. A marble statue of Our Lady of Peace stands in front of the entrance; it was installed in 1959. The church became the city’s cathedral in 1960, and Pope John XXIII granted it the title of minor basilica in 1962. The cathedral faces Paris Commune Square, close to the Central Post Office and Nguyen Hue walking street, so the three landmarks fit naturally into a District 1 walking route. During the current restoration, the church is closed to tourists but remains open for daily Mass, according to the cathedral’s official website. From the square, visitors can continue to the Central Post Office and along Dong Khoi Street towards the People’s Committee Building, making the cathedral an easy stop on a walk through the city centre.
