St George's Church is the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia: it was consecrated in 1819, three decades after the British founded their trading post on Penang. The building was raised by the hands of convicts sent from India, in the Greek Revival manner, with a columned portico and a light spire above the western front. A domed pavilion in memory of Francis Light, the founder of George Town, stands on the lawn in front of the entrance. The church suffered badly during the Japanese occupation and lost its furnishings, and after the war it was restored anew. It is now on the list of national monuments of Malaysia, and the Penang state museum works on the same square nearby.
