Umbrella Alley

The Umbrella Alley is a short passage between shophouses in old George Town, above which several dozen open umbrellas hang on stretched lines. They were put up as decoration for the quarter, and the lane quickly became one of the most photographed spots in the city, on a par with the wall paintings. By day the umbrellas cast a motley shade over the brick pavement, and in the evening they are lit from below so that the whole passage glows with patches of colour. Coffee houses and small shops have taken the ground floors on either side. The place lies inside the protected historic core of George Town, not far from Armenian Street.
