The Hainan Temple in George Town is the clan house of migrants from the island of Hainan and at the same time a shrine of Mazu, the protector of sailors. The Kheng Chew association took shape in the middle of the 19th century, when Hainanese sailed to Penang to hire on as cooks, shopkeepers and ships' servants. The present building with its green tiles and painted gable took on its look at the beginning of the 20th century. The entrance is framed by two granite columns with openwork carving, and dragons wind around them from the base right up to the roof. Stone lions and a heavy censer stand in the courtyard, and a board with the name of the association hangs above the doors.
