Liberty Shrine, also known as Mactan Shrine, is a memorial complex on the Punta Engaño peninsula of Mactan Island. It commemorates Lapulapu and the Battle of Mactan. Philippine Republic Act No. 5695 established the national shrine at the approximate site of the battle fought on 27 April 1521. The law describes the shrine as including the Magellan monument and adjoining grounds.
The open plaza brings together a bronze statue of Lapulapu and a stone monument associated with Magellan’s expedition. A separate National Historical Commission of the Philippines marker is dedicated to Lapulapu; it was unveiled on 27 April 2021. Its text describes the Mactan leader’s resistance to Spanish authority and the encounter in which Magellan was killed. Walking among the monuments and reading their inscriptions gives visitors more context than viewing a single statue in isolation.
The visit is outdoors. Visitors can walk around the plaza, look closely at the sculptures and read the historical markers. Allow time for both sections of the memorial grounds. There is limited shade in the open areas, so water and sun protection are useful in the middle of the day. The shrine is on Punta Engaño Road in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Check current access arrangements and visiting hours locally before setting out.
