Mardi Himal Base Camp sits on a high trail south of the Annapurna massif, beneath the distinctive peak of Machhapuchhre. It is one of the upper points on the Mardi Himal trek, which follows narrow ridges and forested slopes before emerging above the tree line into open mountain country. Depending on the chosen approach, the route starts near Pokhara and passes through Phedi or Kande, Pothana, Forest Camp, Low Camp and High Camp. The final section to base camp climbs over rocky ground, where altitude, wind and rapidly changing weather matter. Open sections offer views of the southern Annapurna slopes, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre; Mardi Himal itself lies near the main ridge and is not a routine tourist summit. The trek is popular because it can be reached from Pokhara in a relatively short itinerary and passes through several distinct landscapes, from rhododendron forest to alpine terrain. The upper trail remains sensitive to snow, fog and trail conditions, so visitors should check local information and allow time for delays. Base camp is normally visited as part of a multi-day trek rather than as a day walk.
