Masjid Agung Jami stands on the western side of Alun-Alun Merdeka, in the centre of Malang. Its paired minarets and large ornamented dome make it easy to recognize among the surrounding city blocks. The main facade faces the square, so the mosque fits naturally into a walk through the central district, alongside the town hall, shopping streets and shaded paths around the plaza.
