The principal congregational mosque of Afghanistan, founded in the 12th century under the Ghurids and restored repeatedly between the 15th and 20th centuries. It is famous for its enormous iwan with turquoise mosaic and Kufic calligraphy carved into the plaster, and counts among the most beautiful mosques in the Islamic world.
